Police in Marsabit town this afternoon intercepted a lorry which was transporting bhang worth Shs.5 million at KCB Barrier along Marsabit-Moyale highway.
Both the conductor and the driver were arrested by the police.
The bhang is estimated to weigh 100 kilos and hidden inside bags of grains and other goods.
Speaking to Radio Jangwani, Marsabit County Police Commander, Ben Kogo confirmed the arrest of the two and said that he suspects the bhang was being transported from Moyale to Nairobi for sale.
“We suspect that the drug was being transported from Moyale to Nairobi for sale,” he said.
Kogo said that members of the public need to volunteer information to the police on criminals, adding that the identity of the source will always be kept secret.
“Members of the public should always be free with us and give us any information without fear of being victimised as the identity of the source shall remain secret,” he said.
Kogo said Marsabit County has now become a transit route of bhang from a neighbouring country to other places within not only the county but also the rest of the country.
He urged the public to work with the police in eliminating the illegal bhang business which he said has ruined the lives of many youths.
The vehicle was impounded and is at Marsabit police station as investigation continues.
The two are being held at Marsabit police station for interrogation before being taken to court tomorrow.
