Six Ethiopians appeared before a Marsabit court on Monday to face charges of being in the country illegally.
Gemenchu Genffe, Genzebe Kurra, Adissu Akano, Orkissa Orkano, Geremen Geteto, and Urmale Ogande were jointly charged that on January 3, in Kiwanja Ndege within Marsabit town were found in Kenya without a permit.
They appeared before Marsabit resident magistrate B.M. Ombewa. The six want the Kenyan government to grant them asylum saying they are not ready to go back to Ethiopia for fear of being prosecuted.
They were in the meantime remanded at the local GK prison until April 17 when their case will be mentioned. The court has meanwhile made a request for them to be escorted to UNHCR for Reception Conditions Directives by the police.
Police and immigration officials have decried increased cases of Ethiopian aliens are nabbed in the country while on transit to either Tanzania or South Africa.
