The 2017 legislative session is right around the corner, and it’s a close race for the new Speaker of Marsabit County Assembly Legislature.
The top contenders to become the next Marsabit County Assembly speaker is beginning to emerge, days after recently concluded 2017 polls.
The incumbent Speaker Mathew Loltome is eyeing to retain the powerful position and he will battle with Long serving administrator, (public relations and communication specialist) Ambrose Harugura currently Moyale Sub County Administrator.
The two enter the race which shaping up to be a do-or-die duel among rendille tribe who voted for Jubilee Party, in the County.
Jubilee won the most Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats in the just-concluded polls, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) indicating that the Jubilee party bagged 7 seats while Frontier Alliance Party got 5 seats, KANU garned 3 seats while PNU and MCCP got 1 seat respectively out of the 17 newly elected MCAs across the vast County.
Moyale Sub-County Administrator Ambrose Harugura seek to wrest the coveted seat from the immediate former holder, Mathew Loltome, who successfully managed 2013 house with alot of scrutiny.
The two and other unknown contenders who have made their aspirations for the lucrative seat known, bringing the gap for those who have expressed interest. But even as the jostling intensifies, sources within Jubilee indicate that the party is zeroing in on specific candidate, with Mr Loltome as the front-runner.
Loltome was also involved deeply in Mr Ali’s campaigns where he helped marshal rendille votes in entire Marsabit County giving a golden chance to Governor elect Muhamed Ali’s team with a smooth win after first attempt in 2013.
On his part, Mr Loltome’s experience having served as a Speaker with the first Marsabit County Assembly gives him an additional boost. With Jubilee set to control the assembly, it will be interesting to see how the duel unfolds.
