Maxwell Nyamu, the race coordinator confirmed that the route for the races has been inspected and cleared ahead of the event that was launched yesterday at National Museum of Kenya.
“So far, 629 athletes have registered for the event but the exercise is still ongoing. As per now, we can’t really tell how much the winners in various races will pocket but all this is being worked on and we will share the information once we get the exact amount,” said Nyamu.
He, however, said that athletes from Marsabit who will emerge winners in the 21km race will return home with livestock including camels, cows and goats.
Marsabit County Governor Ukur Yatani said they are looking forward to make the event an inter-regional. He said, “Marsabit in partnership with the relevant agencies of the national government has continued to organise the festival, which has grown over the years, making it an important event in Kenya’s national calender.”
He added, “The importance of this festival has recently been recognised and was recently nominated for the 2015 India’s prestigious Tagore International Awards for promoting social harmony,” he noted. The theme for this year’s event is celebrating cultural diversity for tourism and sustainable peace.
