Mistaken Identity (Part 1)

We couldn’t let this car go or give it back unless we were done but what if we got caught? Either way, we were dead anyway.
We had stolen this Noah KBX 396N along Jakanda road while escaping. Someone had framed four of my friends and I that we were the sole supplies of ‘COC’ in town. Three of my friends were already in custody and I could swear on whatever that breathe they were already sweating blood with torture. I’m sure the police were already saying that they were hardcore and that they would not crack.
The fact is, we are all innocent, but the police don’t know that we have never ever tasted cocaine in our life perhaps marijuana and I swear to you we were just curious to experience the taste and the effect.
We all lived in the same apartment James and Wilfred shared a bedsitter, Mario liked his space and lived in a spacious single room alone. Meshack in a bedsitter and me too.
My name is Scarlet, I’m the best taxi driver in town. I’m a university graduate with a bachelor’s degree in interior design. Unfortunately, I could not secure a job and that is how I landed in the taxi driving job. When I say the best, it means I’m the fastest, most careful and reliable.
James and Wilfred work in children non-government organization, Mario is a freelance writer, Meshack is a civil engineer. Every weekend, we hang around at Delialito club where we relief our week stress and prepare to move on. This is exactly where we met before realizing we were living in the same apartment. Most of the club in town knows us. We had made a pact not to drink during the weekdays and when we decided to have fun, the crazy five are well known for it.
Two weeks ago, a man approached us, he called himself Ricardo.
He said, “How would you like to make more cash?”
“How much?” Wilfred, he was the most outspoken of all.
“you think we are broke?” Mario always scrutinizing everything.
“Seventy thousand, I had you ‘crazy five’ know how to party, seventy thousand would add into the fun,” He was very eloquent with his English. He was wearing a blue suit, black shoe, white shirt, and a red tie. He has this cute brown face with well-shaped beards.
“in return for?” Asked Mesh
“I want you to pick some bags and bring them to my village,” He replied scratching his chin.
“Why don’t you pick them yourself?” Mesh asked curiously. I was still watching thinking and calculating the amount we would share. Fourteen thousand was quite a catch. I would use that cash really, I needed a lot of money to pay for my mother hospital bill.
“It’s my wedding and I have a lot of things to do. The planning; you know?”
“What’s in the bags?” Mesh asked.
“imported wedding gown and some few staff I wanted for my wedding. I would have picked them myself, but they will be arriving tomorrow evening and I’m needed at home by today,” He explained.
I scanned him his clothes and his gait and figured that he is elegant and probably very rich.
“Plus, I heard that you are very good and reliable at what you do,” he added instantly this time addressing me. Was he doing this to praise me and probably make me accept? Well, it was working. I felt proud that people had started gaining popularity. Not that I wanted fame but who doesn’t? I remained silent for some time still regarding him. The deal sounded too good to be true. Too much money for a little job. But who cares, some rich people just like giving away many just to make sure their job is done.
“a hundred or nothing,” I said flatly. After all, we all wanted our share and the taxi got to be paid too. That means that my share had to be double.
“but it’s not too far, in fact, 70 is too much,” he defended.
“my friend, you can do it yourself then, have a good evening. Let’s go, guys,” I said taking Meshack’s hand. They followed me reluctantly.
After a while, he called us, and the deal was sealed. He gave us the address where to pick the bags and where to deliver them he paid 60% cash and the rest was to be paid after the owner had received the package.
